This is the 2022-23 High School Basketball Instruction Video which includes the NFHS Rules Changes & Points of Emphasis. This is for all basketball officials, coaches, players and others to review so that everyone knows the new rules changes and points of emphasis for the basketball season. We are in need of more officials (for all sports across the country). Contact your state high school association or a local high school sports official, sports coach or school athletic director to find out how to become an official. Hello CPS Boy's Basketball Officials,
I hope you are doing well. Below are the latest updates and reminders for all officials to address and enforce during all games.
- Call your partner(s) and the school on game day to make sure there are no last minute changes. Contact your partner(s) to provide an update of your arrival time.
- All officials are expected to review and enforce the topics in the 2022-23 Basketball Rules Changes and Points of Emphasis video.
- Continue to enforce good sportsmanship, the coaches box rules, allow freedom of movement (Rythm, Speed, Balance, Quickness), reduce physicality and illegal contact (which includes hand checks, hooks, holds, pushes, elbows, forearms, body bumps, illegal screens, rough play, off ball, post play, etc.).
- Officials can not not have cell phones and/or ear buds (wired or wireless) on them while working during any game.
- Officials must dress appropriately and remain professional at all times..
- Officials must have a pre-game officials meeting as well as a coaches and captains meeting before the game starts.
- Officials must check the scorebook to make sure each player's first name, last name and number are in the book before the game starts.
- Officials must sign the scorebook and put your IHSA number in the book as well.
- When stopping the clock to bring in substitutes, you only need to raise one open-hand above your head.
- At most CPS schools, there are students who are the scorekeeper and/or timekeeper. During timeouts and some dead ball situations, we need to check the scorebook and game clock to make sure they are accurate. If you notice that coaches and/or players are constantly shouting or yelling at scorer or timekeeper, please ask them to stop. Let them know that only the officials should address the scorekeepers and timekeepers. Remember that they are extensions of the officiating crew. We need their support to make the game go smoothly.
- Boys basketball officials do not need to send scores after conference games. This is only required during the CPS boys basketball playoff games.
Keep up the great work and continue to manage your games well.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
